Solving the overall problem will require radical changes at the individual, corporate and governmental levels of society. However, cleanup of the oceanic accumulation zones is necessary, because the current plastic pollution will not go away by itself, and it creates an ecological risk by eventually breaking down into more dangerous microplastics.
